Housings are assigned to different IP protection categories, which represent different levels of protection for the modules against ambient influences and for the operator against dangers arising from the voltages used.
The categories are defined by way of the maximum cross-sections of openings in the surface and on the basis of certain test criteria.
The protection requirements can also limit the possibilities for the dissipation of heat from an enclosure (high degree of protection -> no possibility for direct utilisation of the ambient air)
