EC directives were laid down to help promote technical harmonisation in the EC national markets on the basis of the so-called "New Approach" (1985).

New Approach:

  • Fundamental requirements in the directives,
  • Implementation of these directives by way of harmonised standards
  • Determination of possible test and certification procedures

  • Simple pressure vessels 87/404/EEC
  • Safety of machinery 89/392/EEC
  • Telecommunications terminal equipment (R&TTE) 91/263/EEC
  • Electromagnetic compatibility 89/336/EWG
  • Low-voltage equipment 79/23/EEC
