EC directives were laid down to help promote technical harmonisation in the EC national markets on the basis of the so-called "New Approach" (1985).
New Approach:
- Fundamental requirements in the directives,
- Implementation of these directives by way of harmonised standards
- Determination of possible test and certification procedures
