Rittal – Share knowledge, achieve more   Knowledge is more than just information. Knowledge must be made available for universal use, since it is the only resource which multiplies as it is shared. In order to utilise knowledge productively, however, we must be attuned to the customer's way of thinking. Understanding the customer's requirements is vital. Only in this way does knowledge become a productive factor. And only in this way are we able to offer customers our pioneering solutions.

Distinction busbar systems / distributor systems

Distinction busbar systems / distribution systems

In order to get a general idea of the costs the products are subdivided into busbar system technology and distribution systems including enclosure technology.

    Busbar systems:

    • RiLine 60
    • Busbar system up to 1250A
    • Busbar system up to 1600A
    • Busbar system up to 2500/3000A
      + Accessories and top-mounting components

    Distribution systems:

    • Ri4Power Form 1
    • Ri4Power Form 2-4
    • ISV

Testing of the above-mentioned product groups is prepared and supported by Rittal. It is necessary to test the products according to the current standards and to recheck in case of amendments. The test results are used for constant development of products and documented in tables and as diagrams in technical documents thus reflecting the performance of the Rittal systems. A uniform test procedure enables Rittal to offer the customer a reliable complete solution even when combining different product groups.

All these facts guarantee that our customers can order tested and approved products from the Rittal series range worldwide!

Type-tested low-voltage switchgear

Type-tested low-voltage switchgear
Safety is an essential aspect for low-voltage switchgear applications. The standard governing the manufacture of low-voltage switchgear and distributors is:

DIN EN 60439-1 (DIN VDE 0660 Teil 500) : Part 1: Low-voltage switchgear combinations – Requirements for type-tested and partially type-tested assemblies.

This standard makes a distinction between

  • type-tested assemblies (TTA) and
  • partially type-tested assemblies (PTTA)

The type tests assure that the tested switchgear combination meets the requirements of the planned application field, e.g. with regard to temperature rise and short-circuit resistance.

Testing experience IEC / UL   Testing experience IEC / UL

The worldwide requirements for electrical equipment result from various standards.

  • The internationally most commonly used standard for busbar systems and ready-to-use low-voltage distributors is IEC 60439-1 “Low-voltage switchgear combinations; part 1: Type-tested and partially type-tested assemblies“.
  • A further very commonly used standard for the North-American market is UL 508 “Industrial-Control-Equipment“.

In principle the aim of both standards is the reliable design and safe operation of electrical plants. Differences in testing are mereley in the testing procedure and testing documentation so that both standards must be tested independently from each other.

» Basic knowledge IEC / UL

Rittal aims at fulfilling both standards for power distribution products. In practice, this means that all busbar systems and complete distribution systems must be tested and approved individually.

Approbationen

Approvals
Products which conform to the relevant regulations are a key factor for problem-free acceptance of electrical systems in North America. UL-approved components provide a suitable basis, saving time and money for the user by minimising acceptance problems in advance.

Why are UL approvals important?

  • International regulations and standards such as NEMA and IEC are used as a basis by manufacturers for product developments and subsequent testing.
  • Nationally recognised testing laboratories confirm and certify that a product meets specific standards. In North America, this is carried out by organisations such as UL or CSA (Canadian Standard Association).
  • For many applications, only UL and/or CSA-approved products are acceptable. It is therefore advisable to ensure that electrical control systems intended for use in North America are designed with UL-approved components.

UL or Underwriter Laboratory was founded in 1894 as a non-profit-making organisation for testing and certification.
UL operates five testing laboratories in the United States and subsidiaries worldwide, with an emphasis on product testing aimed at general safety.

Participation in ZVEI, standardisation committees   Participation in ZVEI, standardisation committees
The ZVEI (Zentralverband Elektrotechnik- und Elektronikindustrie, the German Electrical and Electronic Manufacturers' Association), represents the economic, technological and environmental policy interests of the German electrical and electronics industry at the national, European and international levels. It provides specific information about the economic, technical and regulatory framework conditions of the electrical industry in Germany.

Rittal is a member of the ZVEI specialist association in the department of switchgear, controlgear, industrial control equipment.

About 1600 member companies are represented here to protect the interests of their specialist sector and to support the ZVEI in fulfilling its tasks from the specialist part. The department is industry-based and subdivides into four specialist divisions and 14 expert circles and working groups according to the product range to be represented. In the different specialist divisions the members are concerened with national and international market-oriented tasks. These include the preparation of market statistics, the evaluation of technical/economic trends and participation in interational trade fares. A main topic is the discussion and handling of industry relevant directives and laws and their effect. The members are concerned with national and international technology-oriented tasks, e.g. participation in standardisation committees, the evaluation of technology trends and the evaluation of comments on industrial solutions for products, packages and disposal. Rittal is a member of the specialist divisions switchgear and controlgear and attends the specialist circles.
